The president of Lebanon, Michel Aoun, has said the blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in a warehouse in the port area of the city.

The country’s Health Minister Hamad Hasan has said that 73 people have died so far, but the number of people who died can increase significantly. Hasan has reported that the city of Beirut has also suffered extensive damage. The explosion filled the hospitals in Beirut. The condition turned out to be that many of the injured were treated inside the corridor. Lebanon’s Red Cross has appealed to people to go to the hospital only when it is very important.

Lebanese President Michael Aoun wrote on Twitter that stern action would be taken against those possessing 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate without security arrangements. Those killed in the blast include Nizar Nazarian, general secretary of the Katib party. The headquarters of Nizar’s party were right in front of the port of Beirut.
